Smart kids likely to vote for Liberal Democrats and Greens

The University of Edinburgh and the UK Medical Research Council have conducted a study that shows children with higher IQs are more likely to vote for Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. The study revealed that this group of children were more likely to vote in general than their peers, and that it was more likely that they would participate in demonstrations and take an interest in politics. Roger Scully, a Professor at Aberystwyth University, said, “I think that increasingly we are finding that the orientations you are born with do have some particular relevance in life. It could be that a general IQ is maybe linked to life experience and general receptiveness to new political issues.”

Scully added that, “It could also be that IQ is a proxy for later education. People who go to university are more likely to vote Liberal Democrat or Green because the general ambience of it makes students more aware of issues like civil liberties and green issues.”

Ian Deary, the University of Edinburgh psychology professor who headed the study, said, “The association between measured intelligence in childhood – before any secondary education – and how people participate in the democratic process is something that needs exploring.”

Deary went on to say that, “How one votes and to what extent one takes part in the political process are the result of thinking and decision-making, so it makes sense to address cognitive ability as a possible part of the explanation.”
