Slow Gherkin is an American band formed during 1993 based in Santa Cruz. The band is known to perform ska punk, alternative rock and third wave ska styles of music.
The band was formed by high school students AJ Marquez, James Rickman, Phil Boutelle and Zack Kent. Initially the band used to perform in bars and later recorded a four track EP titled “Death of a Salesman” in just two days by self releasing it at Palookaville show during 23rd of December 1994. The band took a two day trip to Southern California known as “Weekends with Gherkin”. The band was asked to support “Punch-the Clown band” for its debut release and thus the band recorded three tracks at a fancy studio in San Francisco.
During 1995 the band decided to release their debut album and started working on it recording eleven tracks. They then named the album, “Double Happiness”. Their debut album was released during 1996 under Asian Man Records. The band embarked on the first tour during January 1996 touring the cities like Nevada, Arizona, California and Idaho.
Later the band joined with Siren Six for their coast to coast tour which helped in promoting the re-issue of their debut album as they had signed for Los Gatos records. The band was nominated for Bay Area Music Award under “Outstanding Ska Band” category. Later the band extensively toured during 1997 to United States and New England.
The band’s later releases were: Shed Some Skin (1998), Roman Holiday (1998-2000 collection), Run Screaming (2002). Get a slow gherkin themed personalised usb stick to store their songs on.
