Slackers’ is a 2002 college-comedy film directed by Dewey Nicks. It was written by David H. Steinberg and was released in the United States on February 1, 2002. The story follows three college students who cheat an academic system to make their way through college. However, they eventually encounter a school geek who discovers their scam. Afraid to have their deceit disclosed, they accept the geek’s condition to help him win over a popular smart girl’s attention. The film stars Devon Sawa, Michael C. Maronna, Jason Segel, Jason Schwartzman and Jaime King.
A school geek named Ethan (played by Jason Schwartzman) harbours an obsession over the campus’ gorgeous brainy girl, Angela (played by Jaime King). However, Ethan is socially awkward and is not brave enough to court her, knowing that he does not stand a chance with Angela. He accidentally discovers his classmate Dave (played by Devon Sawa) cheating on an exam. Dave and his two other friends and roommates, Sam (played by Jason Segel) and Jeff (played by Michael Marona), have designed a plan for their final exam. The three had cheated, lied and schemed their way through college, and are now are about to graduate from Holden University. However, the friends are worried that they might not be able to graduate now that Ethan has discovered their scam. Ethan confronts the three and agrees to not disclose their deceitful act if they help him to win over Angela. Realising they have no choice, the scamming trio agree to the deal. Thinking that the proposal could come easy, the trio returns to their standard activities involving drinking, picking up girls and paying intelligent students to take examinations for them. Problems arise when Dave starts to fall in love with Angela during their first meeting. Despite Ethan’s woes and attempts to seduce (and Dave’s persistent help), Ethan knows that Angela does not have any feelings for him and will never reciprocate the kind of feelings he has for her. Instead, Angela falls in love with matchmaker Dave. Ethan soon asks for help from Sam and Jeff to attempt to ruin Dave and Angela’s relationship. Ethan is losing his patience and Dave realises that he has to choose whether to be expelled or set free the girl he adores. In a last attempt, Ethan tells Dave, Sam and Jeff that he plans to cancel the deal and put their entire academic stance at risk. Ethan, however, may have underrated the trio’s capabilities.
The movie depicts the typical lives of college students. It also implies that students’ dirty schemes involving cheating do not usually prosper. Toward the end of the movie, the characters realise their faults and find a second chance through studying. The movie also implies that with sheer drive and determination, a student can succeed academically. ‘Slacker’ is an entertaining and suggestive comedy flick. It shares common themes present in other teen movies, but ‘Slacker’ carries originality, depth and an identity of its own. There may be minor plot flaws, but these are overshadowed by the cast’s excellent performances. Actors Jason Segel and Michael C. Maronna particularly demonstrated stand-out acting abilities.
