While patrolling, Buffy comes across two demons and successfully kills one, but the other flees. Unknown to her, Buffy has been poisoned by the demon’s blood, and she doesn’t notice it until the following day when it starts itching. The group leave their discussion of the Mayor’s ascension and their lack of details so that Giles can investigate the cut. It becomes clear that Buffy has been infected with an aspect of the demon.

The following day Buffy is disturbed by the thoughts of the other students inside her own head. Explaining this to Giles, he researches the matter. In an attempt to put her new gift to good use, Buffy meets with Angel, trying to read his mind and put to rest her doubts from Angel’s hoax with Faith. She ends up disappointed that his mind cannot be read, but she is elated when he explains his feelings without supernatural methods of extracting them.

Her gift intensifying, Buffy hears a disturbing thought filled with rage. She hears someone wanting all the students dead, but all turns black before she can hear more. When she comes to, she explains the situation to her friends and then organises everyone to find the killer. She also discovers through Giles’s thoughts that she will go mad if she is not cured. Giles discovers that the cure for Buffy’s ailment requires the second demon’s heart, which Angel goes to recover. Once it is obtained, it is distilled into a potion which cures Buffy.

Cured, Buffy discovers a letter from Jonathan in Freddy’s (a potential suspect) office and manages to stop both Jonathan’s suicide and the kitchen worker’s plan of poisoning the students.
